Résumé |  Fibrosis is a maladaptive repair response common to the development of an assortment of chronic kidney diseases (CKDs). It is characterized by aberrantly excessive deposition and processing of extracellular matrix (ECM) materials, like collagen and fibronectin. Matricellular Proteins (MPs) are a family of proteins known to process the ECM and regulate cell-ECM interactions; hence, representing a logical therapeutic approach against kidney fibrosis. We report that the MP SMOC2 is upregulated in the kidney tubular epithelial cells and intracellular space of mice and humans following fibrosis. Our findings implicate that SMOC2 is a key signaling molecule in the pathological secretome of a damaged kidney, which offers SMOC2 as a novel therapeutic strategy for inhibiting kidney fibrosis — an unmet medical need. As SMOC2 was used to successfully validate the approach of targeting MPs in kidney fibrosis, our future studies will be to characterize other upregulated MPs during kidney fibrosis.
